Vehicle Mounted Cherry Picker Hire in Fife Supports Roof Safety Inspections at Quaker Oats

101 Height for Hire Provides Vehicle-Mounted Access Platform for Industrial Roof Safety Line Inspections

When it comes to working at height, safety is never something that should be taken for granted. This is particularly important on large industrial buildings where maintenance teams, roofing contractors and inspection specialists may need access to roof areas many metres above ground level.

A recent project took our team at 101 Height for Hire to the Quaker Oats facility in Fife, part of Pepsi Co, where our Vehicle Mounted Cherry Picker Truck was hired to support specialist contractors carrying out safety inspections of roof-mounted harness anchorage lines.

The task highlighted just how important it is to have the right access equipment available, especially when working around large industrial buildings where access can be restricted by surrounding structures, pipework and machinery.

The Challenge – Inspecting Roof Safety Lines on an Industrial Building

Industrial buildings such as those found at food manufacturing facilities present particular challenges when it comes to roof maintenance and safety inspections. Roof-mounted safety lines, sometimes referred to as horizontal lifeline systems, are designed to provide suitable attachment points for workers using compatible fall-protection equipment. These systems need to be inspected and maintained by competent specialists to ensure they remain suitable for their intended use.

At the Quaker Oats facility, the task involved accessing the roof area to inspect safety lines used by personnel wearing safety harnesses. However, reaching the inspection points wasn't necessarily straightforward. As our photograph demonstrates, the building was surrounded by industrial structures, including large ventilation ducting, pipework and adjoining buildings. The available working space was relatively restricted, making the choice of access equipment particularly important.

This was exactly the type of situation where our vehicle-mounted cherry picker could provide a practical solution.

Why a Vehicle-Mounted Cherry Picker Was the Ideal Access Solution

For a specialist inspection involving several roof-level access points, erecting scaffolding could have been a time-consuming and potentially disruptive option.

Instead, our MULTITEL MJ226 truck-mounted access platform provided the flexibility required to position inspection personnel close to the areas they needed to examine. With a maximum working height of approximately 22.6 metres and a horizontal outreach of up to 12.4 metres, the cherry picker is particularly useful when working around buildings where obstacles make direct access difficult.

The articulated boom allows the platform to reach up and around certain obstacles, subject to safe positioning, available clearance and the machine's operating limits.

For the Quaker Oats project, this meant the inspection specialists could concentrate on their roof safety assessment while our experienced operator managed the positioning of the access platform.

An important advantage was the ability to undertake the work without having to construct a large temporary access structure around the building.

Working Around Industrial Buildings Requires Careful Planning

One of the biggest considerations when hiring a cherry picker for industrial premises is understanding the environment in which the equipment will operate. Unlike a straightforward residential roof inspection, industrial sites can have restricted vehicle access, overhead obstructions, narrow working areas and equipment that must remain accessible.

The photograph from this Quaker Oats project illustrates these challenges particularly well. Our vehicle-mounted platform was positioned alongside the building, with the boom extending towards the upper roof area while working around existing industrial structures. Before undertaking this type of work, the position of the vehicle, ground conditions, stabiliser requirements, overhead clearances and the movement of people and vehicles must all be considered.

Having an experienced, IPAF-trained operator is therefore an important part of providing a professional access service.

At 101 Height for Hire, we understand that the job isn't simply about getting someone up in the air. It's about helping contractors reach the required working position safely and efficiently.

Why Regular Roof Safety Line Inspections Matter

Roof safety lines are an important part of fall-protection arrangements on many commercial and industrial buildings. They may be used by roofing contractors, maintenance engineers and other specialists who need to carry out work at height. Over time, exposure to the Scottish weather, corrosion, general wear and other factors can affect the condition of components within a roof safety system.

This is why periodic inspections by competent personnel are so important.

A specialist inspection may involve checking:

  • The condition of safety line cables and associated components.

  • Anchorage points and their visible fixings.

  • Signs of corrosion, damage or deterioration.

  • The condition of tensioning devices and connections.

  • Whether the installation remains suitable for its intended use.

The inspection requirements depend on the particular system, its manufacturer's instructions and the applicable safety arrangements.

While 101 Height for Hire does not undertake the technical certification of these roof safety systems, we provide the specialist elevated access equipment that allows qualified inspection contractors to reach the areas they need to assess.

This is another example of how our vehicle mounted cherry picker platform supports essential preventative maintenance rather than simply being hired for repairs.

The Benefits of Hiring Our Cherry Picker for Industrial Roof Inspections

The Quaker Oats project demonstrates several practical advantages of choosing a truck-mounted access platform for industrial building maintenance.

Flexible access around obstacles

Our cherry picker's boom configuration provides valuable flexibility when accessing elevated areas around industrial structures, ventilation systems and adjoining buildings.

Less need for temporary scaffolding

For suitable short-duration inspection work, a vehicle-mounted platform can reduce the time and expense associated with erecting and dismantling scaffolding.

Efficient positioning

The platform can be adjusted to provide access to different inspection points within its safe working envelope, helping contractors carry out their work efficiently.

Experienced operators

Our IPAF-trained operators understand the importance of positioning, stability and safe working practices when operating access equipment on commercial and industrial sites.

Supporting essential maintenance

Whether inspecting roof safety lines, checking industrial cladding, examining guttering or surveying roof structures, our access platform helps specialist contractors carry out their work.

It is another Industrial Access Project for 101 Height for Hire Success!

From historic buildings in Edinburgh to bridges, railway infrastructure and now industrial roof safety inspections at Quaker Oats in Fife, our cherry picker continues to demonstrate its versatility.

Every project presents a different challenge.

Sometimes it is the height of the building. Sometimes it is the limited space available to position the vehicle. On other occasions, it is the need to reach over obstacles or provide access without unnecessarily disrupting activities below.

For this particular project, the requirement was straightforward: provide suitable elevated access so specialist contractors could inspect important roof safety equipment.

Our vehicle-mounted platform provided the practical access solution needed to support that work.
